A dream begins with a vision, and, through a 2017 master planning process, the Miami University Libraries have introduced a vision for tomorrow’s King Library that combines the rich traditions of the past with tomorrow’s boundless possibilities. From encompassing the technologies students need to master to offering the spaces where they will toil into the night, this vision for a reinvigorated King Library captures the vibrancy of Miami’s academic culture and the dedication of its student body.

An inviting presence...

As Cameron walks along Campus Avenue, he senses the energy of King Library. Students mingle around its reinvigorated south entrance, conversing with friends, studying at outdoor tables and enjoying a pristine Oxford spring day. With his books already slung over his shoulder and two tests next week, he decides against trying to study in his off-campus house and, rather, to find inspiration in the shared commitment and community of his fellow students. As Cameron and so many others – each with her or his own needs and interests – pass through King Library's doors, the real journey begins …

Two hours between classes...

On the Ground Floor: With two hours before her next class in McGuffey Hall, Mia heads next door to King Library to take a quick break and finish an assignment. As she approaches King Café to order her favorite fruit smoothie, she quickly orients herself to the space through its open sight lines, checks out upcoming events on the space’s digital screens and scouts out her seating options. She settles in at a table with her smoothie and sets up her laptop to make some final edits to a paper. While she works, she takes periodic breaks to catch up with friends who pass by and pauses to enjoy an impromptu poetry reading in the pop-up event space. Feeling refreshed and with her work finished, she gathers her things and heads back to class.

Welcome to your library ...

On the First Floor: As a first-year student, David is a little intimidated by the idea of a large university library, but he finally works up the courage to take a peek inside. Once through the front doors and into the main lobby, the many possibilities open up before him. King Library’s marketplace concept provides both directed and self-directed guidance to the library’s services, spaces and resources. In looking around the first floor and up into the second level, David knows he has found his home away from home. He cannot wait to collaborate on his next group project in one of the library’s study rooms, and he is very interested in learning about 3D printing in the Maker Space.

On a research mission...

On the First Floor: Jelani has a major research paper due in three weeks, and, while he has a topic in mind, he is not sure how to find the source material he needs to make his case. Upon arriving in King Library’s main lobby, he is presented with a visible range of options and easily navigates to a visible, one-stop service point. From there, he is seamlessly connected with a subject librarian who recommends a couple of scholarly journals and advises him on some additional tools for citing his research. On his way out, Jelani stops by the Howe Center for Writing Excellence and schedules a consultation to get some additional pointers on how to approach his paper.

Pursuing scholarly excellence ...

On the Second Floor: Professor Jenna has completed groundbreaking research in her field of study, and she wants the presentation of her research to be something special. Upon the recommendation of her subject librarian, Professor Jenna stops by Miami’s Center for Digital Scholarship. The expertise and resources available to support her scholarly work are eye-opening. The data librarian offers up some software tools to assist with managing the data she has gathered. She also learns that she can find technical support for building a website to present her research. After talking briefly with one of her students, who is working on a video editing project in the Center for Information Management, Professor Jenna makes herself at home in the faculty commons and outlines the exciting plan for sharing her research.

Burning the midnight oil ...

On the Third Floor: Quinn has found a passion in her study of English literature, and it has led her to King Library’s third floor, where her breath has been taken away. With the guidance of a member of the University Libraries’ special collections staff, she is turning the pages of a rare 17th-Century Shakespeare Folio and feeling very much a part of history. After looking through some other first-edition literature, she is feeling inspired and has a new idea for her capstone project. She has a long night ahead of her as she settles down with a stack of books in the King Library reading room. With falling snow visible over Miami’s campus through the large windows and a fire crackling in the fireplace, she cannot help but feel a sense of connection to all those Miamians before her who have burned the midnight oil while pursuing excellence in their academic endeavors.
